What Is Art Therapy?
Who is Art Therapy For?

Art therapy is a mental health profession in which clients, facilitated by the art therapist, use art media, the creative process, and the resulting artwork to explore their feelings, reconcile emotional conflicts, foster self-awareness, manage behavior and addictions, develop social skills, improve reality orientation, reduce anxiety, and increase self-esteem.

Art therapy allows you to confront deep and sometimes unconscious feelings and fears in a safe, non-verbal way that enables you to come to terms with them gently at your own pace.

Traditional talk therapy requires a lot of work to break through resistance in the therapeutic process. Words can sometimes get in the way of true inner expression.  

How does Art Therapy bypass resistance?

Art therapy can often bypass that resistance by focusing on right brain creative intuition. Many times you may be surprised at what feelings arise and become manifest in your creation.  This information inspires the therapy sessions and enables you to reach your therapeutic goals through discussion with the therapist.

Do I need to be artistic to benefit fully?

You do not need any artistic ability to benefit from art therapy. Art is just the medium for self-expression and it’s the creative process that is important, not the final product.
